MEMPHIS IN MAY: A TRUE BATTLE OF CHAMPIONS

The 36th Annual Memphis in May World Championship Cooking Contest began solemnly with the passing of both John Willingham of Willinghams World Championship Bar-B-Que and Don Pelts, founder of Corkey’s.  But their passion for good friends and good food prevailed as the teams assembled for what was to be another epic battle of swine down on the banks of the Mississippi.

 

Vying for ultimate bragging rights on competition’s biggest stage, 122 teams competed in the Rib division, 36 in Whole Hog, 55 in Shoulder, and 37 in Patio Porkers, as well as a variety of ancillary categories including the highly popular and always entertaining antics of the Piggy Idol Contest, the best t-shirt and best booth contests, the hot wing category, “anything but” categories featuring a variety of meats and sauces, and the 2nd Annual Kingsford Tour of Champions.

 

Shortly after the last of the partyers departed Tom Lee Park Friday night, teams kicked it in to overdrive, preparing for their blind box and onsite turn-ins the following morning.  Soon the golf cart was pulling up to the sites of the nine elite teams that were moving on to finals in each of the three headlining categories – pork shoulder, pork ribs and whole hog.

 

In the end was the much loved members of Sweet Swine O’ Mine who took top honors with their first place shoulder entry, yet each and every team walked away a winner having conquered the dusk, rain and heat to turn out some serious swine.

 

There were past champions, several up-and-comers, and plenty of social cookers, none of which would dispute the fact that the sun was setting on yet another epic year.  It’s just as John and Don would have wanted it…
