Biography: Pig Skin BBQ is a family affair – started four years ago, the team is comprised of team captain Scott Nelson, his wife Katy, their three sons Gavin, Ben and Lucas, and two daughters Chloe and Valerie. The passion for barbecue started with Scott’s father who had the smoker running every weekend during his youth. The team began competing after attending a local barbecue competition and seeing firsthand how it was a great way to bring friends and family together. This year alone, Pig Skin BBQ has won 10 grand championships, including the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue that qualified the team for the Kingsford Invitational. Currently, the team is ranked second in the nation on the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) circuit – the largest barbecue association in the country. What’s the secret to their success? Not being afraid to try new things. For the members of Pig Skin BBQ, competition barbecue has served as a way to bring them closer together with family and friends and make new ones along the way as they compete across the country.
