Grilled New Orleans BBQ Shrimp

March 3, 2014

Many years ago I attended college in New Orleans and while I didn’t learn a lot in my classes, I learned a ton about Cajun and Creole cooking.  One of my favorite dishes was something called barbecue shrimp, made famous by Pascal Manale’s on Napoleon Avenue.  And while it says BBQ in the title, there’s no grilling going on…until now!

12 large unpeeled and deveined shrimp

1 tbsp. Creole seasoning

1 stick of butter

1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp. hot sauce

Juice of one lemon

1 tbsp. chopped parsley

Prepare grill for medium heat grilling, approximately 300 degrees.  In a small saucepan, combine the butter Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce and place the pan on the grill.  Allow the sauce to simmer as you grill the shrimp, stirring it periodically so it doesn’t burn.

Season the shrimp liberally with Creole seasoning.  Once those are seasoned, place shrimp directly on the grill for about four to five minutes per side.

The shrimp will turn from white to a nice light pink when they are done.

Remove the shrimp and sauce from the grill.  Add lemon juice and parsley to the sauce.  Place shrimp in a rimmed serving dish, top with the barbecue sauce, and serve with crusty bread.
